How to edit a PDF online

  1. Drop a PDF onto the editor or click Choose PDF file.
  2. Pick a tool in the toolbar: Add text, Highlight, Draw, Rectangle, Image or Signature.
  3. Click or drag on the page. Select anything you added to move it, resize it with the round handle, or change its colour and size in the properties panel.
  4. Rotate, reorder, duplicate or delete pages in the page panel.
  5. Click Download PDF to save the edited file.

Made a mistake? Undo and Redo (or Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z) step through every change. Your original file is never changed: the editor works on a copy and saves a new PDF.

Add text to a PDF

To add text to a PDF, choose Add text, click where the text should start and type. Press Enter for a new line and Esc when you're done. Drag the text to move it, drag the round handle to make it bigger or smaller, and set the exact font size and colour in the properties panel. Double-click text to change it later.

Text in English and other Latin-script languages is written into the PDF as real text in Helvetica, so it can be selected and searched. Text in other scripts, such as Chinese, Arabic or emoji, is added as a sharp image of the text instead.

Highlight and annotate PDF files

Mark up a PDF the way you would on paper. Highlight places a transparent colour over text, so it stays readable. Draw adds freehand lines and notes with a mouse, pen or finger, and Rectangle frames a part of the page. Choose the colour and line width, then move, resize or delete any annotation.

Annotations are drawn onto the page as vector graphics, so they look sharp at any zoom and appear in every PDF viewer, but they are not separate comments that reviewers can reply to.

Sign a PDF online

To sign a PDF online, click Signature and draw your signature with a mouse, pen or finger. Use Clear to start again, then Insert signature and drag it onto the signature line. It is inserted with a transparent background and can be resized.

This adds an image of your handwritten signature, which is how most everyday forms and agreements are signed. It is not a certified or cryptographic digital signature and doesn't prove who signed. When a contract requires a qualified electronic signature, use a dedicated signing service.

Add images to a PDF

Click Image to place a PNG or JPEG on the current page, for example a logo, a stamp or a photo. Drag it into position and resize it with the handle; the proportions are kept. Images up to 15 MB are embedded at their original resolution. Other formats, such as SVG, are not accepted.

Organize and rotate PDF pages

The page panel shows every page. Click a page to edit it, or Ctrl- and Shift-click to select several. You can rotate selected pages left or right, duplicate them, move them up or down or drag them to a new position, and delete pages you don't need. Rotation is saved the way PDF readers expect, so the page content is not re-rendered.

What you can do with the PDF editor

  • Fill in a form that has no fillable fields: add text on top of the blank lines of an application, order form or registration form, then sign it.
  • Sign a contract or agreement and send back the signed PDF without printing and scanning it.
  • Review a draft: highlight passages, circle problems and add short comments as text.
  • Add a logo, stamp or photo to a document, such as a company logo on a quote.
  • Fix a scanned document: rotate pages that were scanned sideways, delete blank pages and put pages back in the right order.

Edit PDFs privately in your browser

Contracts, invoices and forms are often private. Many online PDF editors upload your file to their servers to process it. This PDF editor opens, displays and saves your PDF in your browser, on your device instead: the file is not uploaded to HTMLSuite or sent to a conversion service, and the PDF libraries that read and write it run locally. Links in the PDF are not clickable while you edit, and scripts inside a PDF are never run.

You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools (F12), switch to the Network tab and edit a PDF. You will see the editor load its own program files and fonts from this site, but no request that sends your document anywhere.

Password-protected PDFs can be opened by entering the password, which is used only in your browser. The edited copy you download is saved without a password.

PDF editor limitations

  • Existing text in the PDF can't be edited or deleted; you can only add content on top of it. Covering text doesn't remove it from the file, so this is not a way to redact information.
  • Signatures are images of a handwritten signature, not certified digital signatures. Editing a PDF that already has a digital signature invalidates it.
  • Highlights and drawings are part of the page, not separate PDF comments, and fillable form fields can't be filled in with the editor.
  • PDFs up to 50 MB and 500 pages can be opened. Very large or complex pages take longer to display.

Frequently asked questions

How can I edit a PDF online?
Open the PDF editor and drop your PDF onto it, or click Choose PDF file. Use the toolbar to add text, highlights, drawings, rectangles, images and signatures, and the page panel to rotate, reorder, duplicate or delete pages. When you're done, click Download PDF to save the edited file.
Is the HTMLSuite PDF editor free?
Yes. It is free, without an account, watermarks or a limit on how many PDFs you edit. It opens PDFs up to 50 MB with up to 500 pages.
Can I add text to an existing PDF?
Yes. Choose Add text, click where the text should go and type. You can move and resize the text and change its font size and colour. Text in Latin-script languages is added as real text, so it stays searchable; other scripts, such as Chinese or emoji, are added as an image of the text.
Can I change existing text in a PDF?
Not in this version. The editor adds new text, images and annotations on top of the page; it doesn't change the words that are already in the PDF. To change those, edit the original document (for example in Word) and export a new PDF.
Can I fill out a PDF form?
Yes, by typing on it: choose Add text and click on each blank line or box to type your answer, then add your signature. This works for any form, including scanned ones. Interactive form fields (boxes you can click into in a PDF reader) can't be filled in with this editor yet.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
You can add text, highlights, drawings, images and a signature to a scanned PDF, and rotate, reorder or delete its pages. The words in a scan are part of an image, so they can't be selected, searched or changed; the editor doesn't do text recognition (OCR).
Can I sign a PDF online?
Yes. Click Signature, draw your signature with a mouse, pen or finger, and insert it. You can then move and resize it on the page. This adds a picture of your handwritten signature; it is not a certified or cryptographic digital signature. If the PDF already has a digital signature, editing it makes that signature invalid.
Can I highlight text in a PDF?
Yes. Choose Highlight and drag over the text. The highlight is transparent, so the text underneath stays readable, and you can pick yellow, green, blue or pink. Highlights become part of the page, not separate PDF comments.
Can I delete or rotate PDF pages?
Yes. Select one or more pages in the page panel (Ctrl- or Shift-click to select several), then rotate them left or right, duplicate them, move them up or down, or delete them. You can also drag a page to a new position. Every change can be undone.
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDF is opened, edited and saved in your browser; it is not uploaded to HTMLSuite or to any other service. If the PDF is password-protected, the password is only used in your browser to unlock it.
Is it safe to edit a PDF online?
With this editor, your PDF never leaves your device: it is processed by your own browser, so there is no copy on a server that could be kept or leaked. You can confirm it in your browser's developer tools (Network tab), where no request sends your document. As with any website, only use it on a device you trust.
Can I edit a PDF without installing software?
Yes. The editor runs in an up-to-date web browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Nothing needs to be installed, and it works with touch on phones and tablets, although a larger screen is more comfortable.
Will editing reduce the quality of my PDF?
No. The original pages are kept as they are: their text, fonts, vector graphics and images are not re-rendered or compressed. Your additions are placed on top. Images you add are embedded at their original resolution, so the file grows by roughly their size.
