About white

#FFFFFF is white in every color model on the web: red, green and blue all at their maximum of 255. It is the brightest color a screen can display, and it is the default background of a web page.

In print, white is not an ink at all. Its CMYK value is 0 % of every ink, which means “leave the paper blank” — so a printed white is only as white as the paper it is printed on.

#FFFFFF is the value of the CSS named color white, defined in the CSS Color specification and identical in every browser.

Other colors called white

  • Whitesmoke (CSS) #F5F5F5A very light gray, popular as a page or card background.
  • Snow (CSS) #FFFAFAWhite with the faintest warm, pinkish tint.

White shades and tints

White cannot get any lighter, so it has no tints. Its shades — mixes with black — are the grays between white and black. Click a swatch to copy its HEX code.

Colors that go with white

White is a neutral with no hue, so it has no complementary or triadic colors of its own. Neutrals go with almost any color — pick an accent in the color wheel or the palette generator.

White contrast and readability

On a white background, black text reads best (21.00:1). Here is how white works as a text color:

#FFFFFF on white

1.00:1

Large text

  • AA normal text (4.5:1)Fail
  • AA large text (3:1)Fail
  • AAA normal text (7:1)Fail
  • AAA large text (4.5:1)Fail

  • AA normal text (4.5:1)Pass
  • AA large text (3:1)Pass
  • AAA normal text (7:1)Pass
  • AAA large text (4.5:1)Pass

Black text on white gives the maximum possible contrast of 21:1. For large reading areas some designers prefer a slightly softer off-white, such as whitesmoke (#F5F5F5) or #FAFAFA, to reduce glare on bright screens.
